No pyro reminder ahead of upcoming football season

Wembley Stadium connected by EE has issued a reminder to all supporters about the prohibited use of pyrotechnic devices, ahead of the upcoming football season.

The use of pyrotechnics, including flares, smoke bombs, and fireworks, inside and outside Wembley Stadium, including fan zones and external concourses, is illegal. This is due to the real dangers they present to spectators, staff, and everyone connected to events at the stadium.

Anyone caught carrying a flare or smoke device inside the stadium will be immediately ejected from the ground and have their details handed over to the police.

The reminder comes after flares were activated at this year’s Emirates FA Cup Final between Crystal Palace and Manchester City. On that occasion the stadium team worked closely with the police to identify culprits with several arrests made.

Under Section 2A of the Sporting Events Act 1985, attempting to smuggle a pyrotechnic device into a football ground is a criminal offence.

A Wembley Stadium spokesperson said: “We are clear in our approach that flares of any kind are not welcome at Wembley Stadium.

“We have extensive CCTV coverage inside and outside the stadium and once an individual or group has been identified and ejected, their details are passed to the police for arrest.

“We will then always seek prosecution. The subsequent action includes, but is not limited to, nationwide football banning orders, fines and the possibility of detention.”

The stadium has a number of security measures in place to tackle the use of flares, smoke devices and pyrotechnics, all of which will be amplified this weekend, when Liverpool take on Crystal Palace in The FA Community Shield.

The measures include:

- Additional bag searches

- Additional patrols with dogs trained to sniff out pyrotechnic material

- Enhanced CCTV within the stadium and external concourses

- Enhanced staff training to spot and deal with potential flares/pyro use

- Working with the local authorities and Metropolitan Police to ensure enforcement action is taken both inside and outside the stadium

- A Public Space Order Protection in Brent prohibits the use of flares, smoke devices and pyrotechnics in the surrounding area around Wembley Stadium. Any breaches will result in the issuing of a Fixed Penalty Notice (£100) payable within 14 days.

A Wembley Spokesperson added: “We work with clubs and supporter groups ahead of every football fixture at Wembley Stadium to highlight the dangers of pyrotechnical devices.

“We want all supporters to come to Wembley Stadium to enjoy the game, and entire experience, without fear of getting seriously hurt or injured for life”
