Ed Sheeran hits a brilliant Wembley hat-trick
How do you go from playing in front of 150 people to selling out three nights at Wembley Stadium connected by EE in the space of just four years? Ask Ed Sheeran!
A few eyebrows were raised back in November when around 240,000 tickets were snapped up in the blink of an eye following the announcement of Sheeran’s triple bill at the national stadium, after all this was one man and his guitar, how would that work?
However, anyone who witnessed the brilliance of the Yorkshire born singer-songwriter during three history making nights at Wembley knows that he is so much more than just another barstool crooner.
Sheeran proved time and time again that he has more strings to his bow than strings on his guitar with an eclectic mix of songs, the ability to adapt them mid performance and cover pretty much anything he likes.
Add to that a popularity within the music industry which few can boast and you have a very powerful act.
That popularity saw a phenomenally strong line-up of supports with Foy Vance, One Republic, Passenger, Rudimental and Example doing much, much more than just warming up the crowd.
And how many people can convince Sir Elton John to join them as a special guest? That moment alone, which shocked the Friday night crowd, sums up Sheeran’s standing in the music industry.
However, to talk much about other acts would be remiss of us, for three nights there was one star and one star only and that was Sheeran.
Whether he had the crowd bouncing to tracks such as Bloodstream or had their hearts swelling to Tenerife Sea he held those inside Wembley in the palm of his hand.
In fact the latter track inspired one gentleman on the second night to get down on bended knee and pop the question to his girlfriend, that is the power of Sheeran!
Sheeran can deliver a party as well as love songs though and that was no better emphasised than in the final track of each epic night.
‘Sing’ probably only lasted four minutes on stage but the fans carried it with them for much longer singing it all the way out of Wembley and down to Wembley Park. Their onward journey filled with memories of Ed Sheeran.
Where Sheeran’s journey will take him, well, on the basis of the past few years and the past few nights the sky is the limit!
