Sarcevic: I’m so happy to have done it for the lads
The Fleetwood Town story is becoming one of the fairy tales of football.
A decade ago the tiny Lancashire club were playing their football in the North West Counties Division One but on Monday Antoni Sarcevic’s strike sealed their sixth promotion in 9 seasons to send Fleetwood into League One for the first time in their history.
And the 22-year-old immediately dedicated his historic goal to his team-mates.
“We are such a tight knit group, we are all together and I’m just so happy I’ve done it for the boys,” Sarcevic told WembleyStadium.com.
“Everyone says we are the club with the money but they don’t know what goes on behind the scenes.”
“We are such a top family club and I’m so happy to be here.”
It was hardly all plain sailing for Fleetwood at Wembley.
Two early chances went begging as the Burton goal lead a charmed life in the opening stages and Sarcevic admits he wondered if the Cod Army’s chance had passed them by.
“How those two early chances didn’t go in I’ll never know and I was just wondering if it’s going to be our day,” he said.
“But you need a bit of luck in a game like this.”
“When I saw it go in I didn’t know what to do. To see it go in is a dream come true.”
Fleetwood is the smallest town to have a Football League club with a population of just 28,000 and a fairly large proportion of that population were inside Wembley on Monday afternoon to cheer their team on.
And Sarcevic says that tells you everything you need to know about the Cod Army’s support.
“Fleetwood is a town with a population of 28,000 and for this many people to come all the way down to London shows the support we have. “
“They’ve been there all season and it’s unbelievable.”
