Fireworks over Wembley after the Champions League Final

May was a busy month for Wembley with eight football games taking place underneath the famous arch, climaxing with three high profile events in the space of six days.

It began with the UEFA Champions League Final between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund on Saturday 25 May.

Crystal Palace and Watford went head-to-head in the Football League Championship Play-Off Final two days later, and finally, England took on Republic of Ireland in an international friendly on Wednesday 29 May.

The combined attendance across all three games was an incredible 248,389 (86,298, 82,025 and 80,126 respectively). The pitch was cut 14 times between Saturday and the England game on the Wednesday, and in total was used 12 times in 25 days.

Wembley’s website also saw some amazing figures in May, the best since re-launching in April 2011 - over three million page views, and more than one million visits and unique visitors.

Champions League Final

A few facts and figures...

• The game was aired in more than 200 countries
• Estimated global average audience of over 150 million
• Global unique reach of over 360 million viewers, confirming its status as the world’s most watched annual sporting event
• In the UK it was watched by an average audience of 4,422,000 on ITV1 (21 per cent audience share) and 927,000 on Sky Sports 1 (four per cent audience share)

Inside Wembley the host broadcasters were ITV and Sky Sports. They had 38 camera positions providing live coverage, including spidercam and helicopter cam. There were also 120 TV rights holder cameras inside the stadium during the game.

Championship Play-Off Final & England International
The Championship Play-Off Final was watched by 1,326,000 on Sky Sports 1 (11.5 per cent audience share) while ITV1 showed the England v Republic of Ireland game to 6,423,000 (28 per cent share).

A busy time for the caterers...

Here are a few more amazing stats. Just under 11,000 stewards and catering staff worked across all three games and fans consumed...

• 101,172 beers
• 71,605 soft drinks
• 16,694 hot dogs
• 13,066 burgers
• 1,595 portions of fish and chips
• 6,466 pizzas
• 10,457 pies
• 4,406 portions of chicken and chips
• 14,994 bags of crisps

In answer to the age old question ‘who ate all the pies?’ it appears to be the fans at the Champions League Final, who consumed nearly as many as the two other games put together!

Concert season

The England v Republic of Ireland game saw the curtain come down on Wembley’s football season, and the pitch covered in preparation for the concert season.

Before that, Wembley hosted its first ever poker tournament, the prestigious International Stadiums Poker Tour, with €1m guaranteed for the winner.

There’s no time to rest though, as every weekend in June features world class gigs:

• June 9 – Capital Summertime Ball hosted by Justin Timberlake
• June 15 – Bruce Springsteen
• June 22 – The Killers
• June 29 & 30 (and July 2 & 5) – Robbie Williams
