WEMBLEY STADIUM plays host to a blockbuster calendar of events as it celebrates its 90th birthday this year.

And what better way to kick it all off that with the launch of the Wembley National Stadium Trust.

The event was hosted at the iconic venue on Wednesday, with leaders from 37 local groups joining the Mayor of Brent and Cllr Michael Adeyeye in attendance.

Also present were sports stars including Olympic gold medallist James DeGale and Premier League footballer Jason Roberts.

Wembley National Stadium Limited Managing Director Roger Maslin presented WNST Chairman Lord Toby Harris with a check for £900,000.

The new charitable trust, funded by a donation of 1 per cent of the stadium’s annual turnover, will be making around £1million available to good causes each year.

One-third of that sum will be for the benefit of groups providing community sports activities for people in the London Borough of Brent.

The first round of grants has supported a diverse range of groups and activities, including football, cricket, boxing, tennis, table tennis and swimming.

And with an epic event calendar in 2013, the continued cast of stellar sporting fixtures and concerts at the stadium will ensure that the funds will be made available to change the lives of individuals and communities through the medium of sport.
