The London 2012 Olympics will see many records broken in all different kinds of sport and Wembley is in with a chance of breaking the record for the highest ever attendance at a women’s Olympic football match.

Olympic women’s football matches will take place at City of Coventry Stadium, Hampden Park, Millennium Stadium, Old Trafford, St James’ Park and Wembley Stadium but with a capacity of 90,000 Wembley is the largest of all the stadia and the only one with a chance of breaking the attendance record.

Wembley is due to host three women’s games: Team GB V Brazil on 31 July, the semi-final on 6 August and the gold medal match on 9 August. One record that already has been broken by all three matches is the highest ever attendance at a women’s football match in the UK. The current record of 53,000 was set on 26 December 1920 when Goodison Park hosted a match between Dick, Kerr's Ladies and St Helens Ladies.

The highest ever attendance at a women’s Olympic football match is currently 76,489 and was recorded at the 1996 Olympics in Georgia at the Stanford Stadium. The record is tantalisingly within reach for all three games at Wembley and particularly so for Team GB V Brazil on 31 July.
