First Official Marriage Proposal at Wembley Stadium
Today for the first time ever at Wembley Stadium, one brave England fan upheld the leap year tradition of asking for her man’s hand in marriage.
Kate Nash created her own special moment of magic on the Wembley pitch when she surprised her childhood sweetheart for his 30th Birthday with a special trip from their home in Stoke on Trent to Wembley to see England take on Holland. The visit included an access all areas tour before kick off during which Kate led her man out on to the Wembley pitch to propose.
Kate said: “I had been thinking about proposing to my boyfriend for a while and, as luck would have it, this year is a leap year and there was an England match on 29 February the day when women can traditionally propose to men. As my boyfriend is a huge England fan and Wembley is such a legendary venue, I decided that there was no better time or place to do it!
“I got in touch with Wembley and they have been brilliant in helping me organise this momentous occasion in my life – I can’t thank them enough!”
Kate proposed to Jon by presenting him with a Wembley Way stone that was engraved with her proposal of marriage. After saying yes, the couple then took their seats at Wembley to enjoy the match between England and Holland. At half time the crowd got to share in their special moment when a video of the happy couple’s proposal was played out over the big screens. You can view the video here.
Their marriage proposal stone will now be installed in the ground outside the stadium on Wembley Way alongside the stones of thousands of other football fans and legends including members of England’s 1966 World Cup winning team and current squad members Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard.
Roger Maslin, Managing Director of Wembley Stadium said: “When we received the call from Kate we were more than happy to help. We value all our fans and are delighted to be able to make Kate and Jon’s dream come true and help them become part of Wembley’s history forever.”
Fans can celebrate important moments in their lives by inscribing Wembley Stones with special messages, dedications and memories. The stones are then installed in the ground on Wembley Way along a number of special panels that are dedicated to some of the greatest events ever to take place at Wembley. The Wembley Way stones are transforming the concourse surrounding the stadium creating a stunning new landmark for Wembley where fans are able to share in the messages and memories of fellow fans from all over the world.
Made from the finest grey granite, the Wembley Way stones come in various sizes starting at just £50. Football fans interested in following in Kate’s footsteps can propose on a Wembley Stone or on a behind the scenes Wembley Tour. You can even book the national stadium for the big day itself!
