Coldplay crowned best Wembley moment of 2012
Coldplay’s explosive set in front of 80,000 fans in June has been voted the best Wembley moment of 2012 according to 71 per cent of the vote, beating a winning Olympic Team GB goal and an FA Cup Final wonder save.
To celebrate Coldplay’s achievement, Wembley Stadium is gifting them a personalised commemorative Stone immortalising the performance on Wembley Way, alongside other legends such as Sir Geoff Hurst.
Coldplay fought off stiff competition from Nick Powell (13 per cent), who scored Crewe Alexandra’s winner in an epic League Two Play-Off Final and Justin Bieber (six per cent), who also raised the roof with his performance at the Capital FM Summertime Ball.
Further down the list came some memorable footballing moments including Petr Cech's wonder save for Chelsea on the line in the final moments of The FA Cup Final against Liverpool, Steph Houghton’s winning goal for Team GB Women against Brazil and Steven Gerrard rushing to console his cousin Anthony, following his missed penalty that handed Liverpool the Carling Cup Trophy against Cardiff.
Coldplay’s Chris Martin said: "This is a great honour for us. We doff our cap to Capital FM and their amazing summertime extravaganza, and we're completely humbled by our incredible fans who voted for us. This award is for them - and for our physics-defying crew - and we hope the stone on Wembley Way makes them proud."
Roger Maslin, Managing Director of Wembley Stadium, said: “Wembley Stadium has seen its fair share of great moments over the years, but 2012 has been particularly special. From dramatic football cup finals, world record breaking rugby union crowds, great London 2012 Olympic moments to brilliant music, the stadium has seen it all this year. It seems only right that we should honour Coldplay’s performance, our fans’ favourite moment with a place amongst other legends on Wembley Way.”
The stone commemorating this achievement will be laid on Wembley Way in the New Year. Fans can also purchase their own stone by visiting www.wembleystadium.com/wembleyway
