Melvin Benn appointed Wembley Chairman

Melvin Benn has today been announced as Wembley Stadium’s new Chairman and will take over from 1 May.‪
Benn takes over from David Bernstein, who was appointed FA chairman earlier this year. His first Wembley board meeting will be Tuesday 24 May.‪

Benn has been a non-executive director of the Wembley Board since July 2008 and is the managing director of Festival Republic, the UK’s leading festival and event promoter. Festival Republic are the group behind the Reading and Leeds Festivals. Benn also has operational responsibility and is licence holder for the Glastonbury Festival.‪

Benn said: “I’m delighted to be taking over the role of Wembley Chairman from David Bernstein. The stadium is going from strength to strength and 2011 promises to be another fantastic year. I look forward to a close working relationship with both David and Alex Horne at The FA and with Roger Maslin and the management team at Wembley.”‪

FA chairman David Bernstein said: “I am delighted with Melvin’s appointment, which provides both board continuity and entrepreneurial flair at this exciting stage of Wembley’s development.”‪

Wembley Stadium managing director Roger Maslin added: “Melvin has great experience in staging the best in entertainment events. I look forward to working with him to further the progress Wembley Stadium has made in being the ultimate venue for the fans, the sports men and women and the artists that grace this fantastic stadium.”‪‪

Benn’s appointment follows the NFL announcement earlier this week that the league will play another regular season game at Wembley this year – their fifth consecutive match since the Stadium re-opened in 2007. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are the designated home team against the Chicago Bears on Sunday 23 October at 6pm GMT.‪

As well as staging The FA Cup Final, Champions League Final and England’s crucial Euro qualifier against Switzerland this summer, the Stadium is hosting a record-breaking eight nights of Take That in July.‪
