Huddersfield Giants and Warrington Wolves will contest this year’s Rugby League Carnegie Challenge Cup Final at Wembley Stadium on Saturday August 29.
The game promises to be one of the closest and most keenly contested finals in recent years and one that the bookies are finding difficult to call.
For the first time since 2006, the final will not feature St Helens, the team who have won the competition for the last three years. The Saints were beaten 24-14 in the semi-finals by Huddersfield Giants who currently lie third in the engage Super League, and have not won the Challenge Cup since 1952.
Led by their influential Australian captain Brett Hodgson, the Giants are the current form side of the competition and one of their best players this year has been 6 foot 6 inches, 19 stone prop forward Eorl Crabtree. The England international is the nephew of the wrestler Shirley ‘Big Daddy’ Crabtree, so expect fireworks from Eorl when he graces the Wembley turf, most probably from the interchange bench.
Huddersfield’s opponents at Wembley on August 29 will be Warrington Wolves who booked their Wembley place with a pulsating 39-26 victory over Wigan Warriors in the semi-finals.
The Wolves last appeared in a Wembley final in 1990 when they were beaten by Wigan and last lifted the trophy in 1974.
They are coached by the current England boss Tony Smith and have a line-up that includes a host of current and former internationals.
Their inspirational leader is Adrian Morley, the England vice captain, however, the man who makes them tick is former Welsh international Lee Briers. One of their most recognisable players is the massive Australian centre Matt King who has a hairstyle which is more akin to the Simpsons character Crusty the Clown!
Tickets for this year’s Carnegie Challenge Cup Final are still available and are priced between £21 and £76. For more information, please call 0844 856 11 13 or visit www.carnegiechallengecup.co.uk
