Wembley and FA staff run their mile at Wembley for Sport Relief
As people up and down the country get ready to take part in sporting activity for BBC Sport Relief, Wembley Stadium and FA staff ran their own Sport Relief Mile at Wembley Stadium on Friday 29 February 2008.
Spirits were high despite the rain and wind, as the 87 members of staff taking part in the Sport Relief Mile gathered at the starting line outside the team dugouts. The Mile was then officially started by one of the runners - Wembley Stadium’s Managing Director, Alex Horne who had brought along the actual starting pistol that was used during the 1948 London Olympics for the occasion. Staff completed two laps of the pitch and one lap outside the stadium before finishing the race outside the players' tunnel.
The first man over the finishing line was Luke Godfrey, FA Learning Coordinator, the first woman was Sacha Olsen, Wembley Stadium Sponsorship Account Manager and the award for Best Fancy Dress went to Dario Giovanelli, FA Legal Administrator.
In total the staff members from Wembley Stadium and The FA who took part in the Sport Relief Mile managed to raise over £4,300 for Sport Relief.
Sport Relief has been appointed as one of The FA’s Charity Partners for 2008. Sport Relief believes that by doing sport, having fun and raising money, everyone can do good and feel good. On this occasion everyone was a winner at Wembley - the runners, Sport Relief and most importantly the people who will benefit from the money raised. Funds raised by Sport Relief will be spent by Comic Relief to help vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both at home in the UK and in the world's poorest countries.
