Tottenham Hotspur 0 Bayer Leverkusen 1
Spurs endured another frustrating night at Wembley Stadium in the Champions League as Kevin Kampl's 65th minute strike sent most of a record breaking crowd home unhappy with the outcome.
A tight but energetic first half saw neither side able to take the initiative but with Spurs finishing the first period the stronger most expected them to capitalise in the second.
However they were to prove masters of their own downfall as static defending, a failure to clear their lines coupled with an unlucky deflection presented Leverkusen striker Kampl with an opportunity from 8 yards he was never likely to squander.
Spurs pushed hard for an equaliser and Eric Dier came closest to providing it when his thumping free-kick cannoned back off the crossbar but, ultimately, the home side didn't create enough clear cut chances to take anything from the match.
So much of the 85,512 crowd, a record home attendance for both Spurs and an English side in Europe, trudged toward Wembley Park hoping for a better day on 7 December when The Lilywhites return to the arch to face CSKA Moscow.
