An early goal by npower League 1's leading scorer Paddy Madden put Yeovil Town on the road to a historic 2-1 Play-Off Final triumph against Brentford at Wembley.
Victory took the Somerset club into the Championship for the first time, just 10 years after making their debut in The Football League.
But if Madden's 24th goal of the season was the catalyst for a hard-earned Wembley win, manager Gary Johnson must take most of the plaudits.
It was Johnson who led the Glovers out of the non-league ranks a decade ago and then took them up to League 1 two years later.
And after then departing for spells with three other clubs, he returned last term and has now delivered Championship football to Huish Park.
Johnson watched with delight as Madden struck in the sixth minute and central defender Dan Burn doubled the lead three minutes before half-time.
But Brentford centre-back Harlee Dean pulled a goal back six minutes after the interval and he and his team-mates pressed hard for most of the second half.
The Bees were unable to force an equaliser, however, and their sad Play-Offs record was extended to seven failures in seven attempts.
Uwe Rosler's team were rocked back on their heels when Madden hit the opener, latching on to a loose ball to exquisitely curl a 20-yard shot into the top corner.
The early strike stung the Bees and and it took them some time to regain their composure. But they gradually got on top and began building pressure, winning a succession of corners and free-kicks in dangerous areas.
Yeovil had to defend in numbers and were finding difficult to get out of their own half. It took them until the 39th minute to win their first corner - but two minutes later and from another flag-kick, they got their second goal.
Midfielder Edward Upson floated an inswinging corner beyond the far post, where central defender Burn rose to send in a header that somehow threaded its way through a ruck of players to cross the goal line.
Brentford retaliated immediately and almost pulled a goal back in first half stoppage time. Striker Marcello Trotta headed left-back Jake Bidwell's cross goalwards but Yeovil keeper Marek Stech made a good diving save.
Stech could not keep out Dean's scoring effort six minutes after the break, though - the central defender evading his marker to meet midfielder Adam Forshaw's corner with a firm eight-yard header that flew into the net.
Brentford then went close to equalising as striker Clayton Donaldson's header was parried by Stech and, from the rebound, substitute Bradley Wright-Phillips' close-range shot was blocked by Glovers captain James McAllister.
Another chance came when Forshaw broke into the penalty area, but he directed his 12-yard shot straight at Stech.
The Bees continued pressing and, in the 83rd minute, Stech had to dive full-length to turn a Wright-Phillips volley past the post.
But, despite a further flurry of attacks, an equaliser proved beyond Rosler's men and the famous victory went to Johnson's Glovers.
