Take That back at Wembley for good
Take That were back at Wembley Stadium in their original five-piece line-up with a sensational performance this evening as they kicked off the first of eight nights at Wembley in front of a crowd of 85,291.
Progress Live was named after the group's reunion album released last year. The album become the fastest selling of the century and now the tour of the same name has become the UK's biggest stadium tour of all time with 27 UK dates that will be seen by more than 1.7 million people. The concerts sold out so fast that Take That have broken their own records which were set on their 2008 Circus tour. In total, Take That will play eight nights here at Wembley Stadium and by the end of the run will have broken the previous record of seven set by Michael Jackson for his Bad tour of 1988.
The evening started in top form with support acts The Pet Shop Boys who performed some of their best loved songs including Suburbia, Go West and Always On My Mind before finishing their set with their most famous West End Girls.
After a clock on the main screen ticked two minutes to showtime, four members of Take That – Gary, Mark, Howard and Jason landed on stage to a massive cheer from the Wembley crowd. The four piece opened the night with a spine-tingling performance of Rule the World from the main stage before walking the catwalk to a B stage in the middle of the stadium to perform Greatest Day and Hold Up a Light in a sea of ticker tape, flanked by dancers with flares. Mark Owen then invited the crowd to join in and sing the national anthem at the national stadium before the band performed Shine and Patience – the song that brought them back together again.
Then came the Robbie show…
Williams reminded everyone what a showman he is in an incredible opening performance of Let Me Entertain You. A visibly emotional Robbie then followed with some of his greatest solo hits including Rock DJ and Come Undone. Performing Feel from a crane that moved through the lucky fans in the front few rows he then got the whole crowd swaying and singing along to his biggest anthem of all time, Angels. Williams worked up the crowd with his trademark charm as night started to set over Wembley and it was clear that he was loving every minute of his time up on stage.
There was a lot of noise from the Wembley crowd but they saved the biggest cheer of the night for when the band finally all appeared on stage together as a five-piece again. The last time Take That were at Wembley a gigantic mechanical elephant was the centrepiece of the show. This time round the band introduced a 60ft moving mechanical robot above the main stage. High above the stage the band performed The Flood the song that brought them all back together whilst performers scaled a towering wall of water beneath them. The band then plunged down onto the stage, led by Robbie of course who went nose-first.
Back together again after 15 Years, Take That looked like they had never been apart. They performed SOS, Underground, Pretty Thing and Kidz during which there was a very entertaining dance-off between Howard and Jason. They then launched into a crowd pleasing medley of their biggest and most loved hits from their early days including A Million Love Songs, Babe, Everything Changes, Back for Good and Pray.
With a spectacular finale during which the men performed on top of a giant mechanical robot that propelled them into the very centre of the crowd as they sang their most recent hit Love Love followed by Never Forget, Robbie’s No Regrets, Relight My Fire (no Lulu) and finishing with Eight Letters.
Take That certainly lived up to the hype and the expectations – it was an incredible show which had everything – an amazing set, massive hits, daring stunts, daring costumes, pyrotechnics and even acrobatics and the band were all on sizzling form. Whilst the production was undoubtedly staggering, it was when the five men all stood together again to perform the classic anthems that made them the most loved boy band this country has seen that the crowd all came together to sing along with their idols under the sparkling Wembley arch.
One fantastic show down, seven more at Wembley to go. If you are coming along, you are in for an incredible night.
