England 2 - 0 USA
Attendance: 71,233
England put in a solid performance at Wembley Stadium beating the USA 2-0 following goals from captain John Terry and man of the match Steven Gerrard.
Before the game started David Beckham was presented with his commemorative hundredth cap by his childhood hero, Sir Boby Charlton - one of the few people who share this achievement with Beckham - Sir Bobby got 106 caps. The presentation to honour Beckham's historic 100th cap which he earnt in March in Paris was made to a rapturous Wembley applause.
The national anthems were then played out to very patriotic crowds - on both sides. Ex-Destiny's Child singer Kelly Rowland sang the Star Spangled Banner before the national anthem rang loud around the national stadium.
The game was lively from the start with Capello's men creating a number of chances and keeping the USA goalkeeper busy. Then England took the lead in the 38th minute when a Beckham free kick found the head of captain John Terry whose perfect finish proved too good for Tim Howard and sailed into the bottom corner of the USA net.
The game then went into half time with England 1-0 up.
The second half started with the news that number 7 David Beckham was being replaced by number 17 David Bentley - a big opportunity for Beckham's young successor to shine. The USA also made changes - substituting Tim Howard for Brad Guzan and bringing on Frankie Hejduk in place of Steve Cherundolo.
The second half started off well with Jermaine Defoe testing the USA goal with a number of chances, only to be saved by the hands of 'keeper Brad Guzan. Fabio Capello then made a couple more changes, bringing on Gareth Barry for Frank Lampard and Glen Johnson for Wes Brown. Immediately things livened up. Gareth Barry, with probably his first touch of the ball, played a perfect pass into the path of Steven Gerrard who, faced with just the USA 'keeper, calmly slotted the ball past Guzan into the bottom corner.
Capello then substituted Jermaine Defoe for Peter Crouch while Bob Bradley brought on young talent Freddie Adu and Eddie Lewis for DaMarcus Beasley and Josh Wolff.
David James made an inmportant save as Eddie Lewis put an excellent cross in from the right - arguably James' greatest test of the match. Rooney was booked for a foul on Frankie Hejduk before being replaced by Joe Cole who came on for his 50th cap. Wayne Bridge then came on for Ashley Cole in the final minutes of the game.
The Nationwide man of the match was deservedly awarded to Steven Gerrard as the match finished 2-0.
England now travel to Trinidad to play a friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago on 1 June.
England next play at Wembley on 20 August in a friendly against the Czech Republic.
