Wembley To Stage Turandot Opera Blockbuster
Turandot, the blockbuster show by veteran Chinese director Zhang Yimou, is set for a huge scale performance this June in Wembley stadium. Zhang Yimou is a master at creating a ceremony to remember. He was the director of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008, a feat that made his name synonymous with ‘stunning visual effects’. Now, he is bringing a new surprise with his version of the famous western classic, Turandot.
When the show is staged in the UK on Saturday 23rd June 2012 at Wembley stadium, Turandot will be conducted by world-renowned and one of the finest and most influential singing actors in the history of opera, Placido Domingo. Lead Tenor is Mario Malaganini. The open-air show set which will demand a custom built huge stage and will largely be the same as the Bird's Nest version; a sensory feast featuring a 17.5m by 52m screen to animate the two-hour, three-act libretto. It is opera on a very grand scale.
Turandot has been performed to sell out audiences in China, crashing all online ticket systems due to overwhelming demand. It is the first time it will be staged in the UK.
Critics say Zhang has created a brand new Turandot. Changing the previous blue and grey hues in Western versions using instead flamboyant, fiery and bright colours and grand scenes, and with bold use of props and over 1000 costumes all exquisitely hand embroidered.
