London 2012 Olympic Football: Senegal 2 Uruguay 0 / Team GB 3 UAE 1
After Sengegal had defeated Uruguay 2-0, Great Britain took a big step towards the quarter-finals of London 2012 with a 3-1 defeat of United Arab Emirates, knocking the UAE out of the competition.
Stuart Pearce's team will need only a draw from their final Group A match with Uruguay on Wednesday 1 August to reach the last eight.
Great Britain went ahead in the 16th minute with a well-worked goal. Manchester United's Tom Cleverley spread the ball out wide to the left from where Liverpool forward Craig Bellamy crossed for his fellow Welshman Ryan Giggs to head across Ali Khaseif and inside the far post.
Marvin Sordell almost made it 2-0 just after half an hour, spinning and firing a powerful low shot which was well saved by Khaseif, who then blocked a Bellamy effort at his near post.
Neil Taylor made a crucial interception to prevent Ismaeil Matar breaking clear, and then Bellamy had the Wembley crowd on its feet with a lightning break down the left and a precision cut-back for Cleverley, whose shot hit both posts but rolled to safety.
Substitute Daniel Sturridge and then Ahmed Khalil both went close to scoring soon after the break, before UAE equalised in the 60th minute when Rashed Eisa raced clear onto a through-ball and finished neatly past Jack Butland.
UAE's confidence improved and keeper Butland did well to save with his legs from Khalil, but Great Britain were back in front in the 73rd minute.
This time Bellamy attacked down the right and when Ali Khaseif spilt his cross, Scott Sinclair, who had just come on, tapped into an unguarded net with his first touch.
Three minutes later it was 3-1, Cleverley intercepting and playing in Sturridge, who raced through towards the UAE box before chipping Khaseif brilliantly.
