Darren Ferguson has praised his players for achieving Wembley glory in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final but left them one simple message after the match, ‘we must be back here in May’!

Posh have spent the season very much in the hunt for promotion back to the Championship and currently sit sixth in the League One table.

And Ferguson believes Sunday’s victory at Wembley could be just the boost their promotion charge needs.

“The way the season has gone I think we needed this,” said the Peterborough boss, “Getting a taste of Wembley and winning a cup can be the catalyst to get us back here on 25 May.”

Sunday was the second time Ferguson had tasted Football League Trophy glory having also won the competition as a player for Wrexham back in 2005.

But he says lifting the trophy as a manager at Wembley Stadium trumps being a winner at the Millennium Stadium nine years ago.

“It’s more satisfying for me as a manager to be honest,” Ferguson replied thoughtfully, “It was great as a player but to win it at the new Wembley has just edged it.”

“This place is some arena; it’s one of the best in the world. To have won a game here is something special.”

Ferguson had ensured his whole family were there to witness him leading his team out onto the hallowed Wembley turf.

Amongst the number were his parents and the Posh boss believes he’s found the answer to the curse which his father, Sir Alex, had become.

“The jinx saw me win but my Mum was here and she’s the lucky omen I think,” joked Ferguson, “I made sure everyone was here today. It was a proud moment leading the team out and it’s a proud moment for them when you win it.”

“It was a good Mother’s Day present for my Mum; I think that was what she wanted.”

Ferguson’s players took the illustrious 107 step route up the Wembley stairs at full time and he believes the memory of that privileged walk will drive his lads on to more glory this season.

“They want to go back up those steps on 25 May“, said Ferguson, “That’s a great motivation to be able to remind ourselves of the feeling we had going up those steps and lifting that trophy.”
