NEW WEMBLEY STADIUM ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST OFFICIAL SUPPLIER

18 May 2004

Wembley National Stadium Limited (WNSL) has announced details of the first Official Supplier to back the new Stadium.  npower, one of the UK’s top three energy suppliers, will exclusively supply the renewable energy to power the world’s greatest sports and entertainment venue when it opens early in 2006.  As a result Wembley will also be the first major UK stadium to be supplied by ‘green’ energy.

The npower supply deal marks the first major announcement in the Wembley Stadium sponsorship programme, which will include Four Founding Partners and nine more Official Suppliers. npower will provide the gas and electricity to power the whole 90,000 seater stadium including the retractable roof, the Club Wembley concourse, all 688 food and drink service points, the heating, all 30 escalators, the media centre and all the technology including the two giant screens (equivalent in size to 600 domestic television sets).

npower, currently the second largest supplier of electricity to large businesses, holds a 20% share of the business energy supply market and will supply all the power using renewable or ‘green’ energy.  Green energy is generated from renewable sources such as wind farms, hydro stations (water) and landfill gas, all essential in the reduction of harmful greenhouse gas emissions.  npower also offers renewable energy to homes at the same price as its ordinary domestic tariff, from its unique partnership with Greenpeace, called npower Juice.

As part of the Official Supplier agreement, npower will also be making six Club Wembley 10 Year Seat Licences* available via a nationwide promotion that will run over the next three years.

Clive Richards, WNSL Head of Sponsorship, comments, “We are thrilled that npower will be providing the power behind the world’s greatest sports and entertainment venue. npower already has a strong sponsorship record in sport and the brand is a leader in the ‘green’ energy market. Wembley Stadium has attracted serious interest from a broad range of potential commercial partners and this announcement marks a key step in the Wembley calendar as the stadium progresses, and it’s just ahead of the next major Wembley event - the lifting of the Arch.”

Kevin Peake, Head of Brand, npower, says ” We are very proud to be appointed as the first Official Supplier for the new Wembley Stadium. Our involvement marks a natural evolution of our sports sponsorship strategy, which began with the npower Test Series in 2001. It seems only fitting that we are now associated with the iconic home of English football. As a leading supplier of renewable energy, we are also delighted that large businesses such as WNSL are now opting for renewable power"
