England to face Germany
1 June 2007

Kick off: TBC

England will face traditional rivals Germany in a friendly International at the new Wembley Stadium on Wednesday 22 August.

It’s six years since the countries last met – in a game no English supporter will ever forget – the stunning 5-1 World Cup 2002 qualifier win in Munich back in September 2001.

Of course, there’s also some Wembley records to try and put straight under the new arch – Germany were the last team to play at the old Wembley and left with a 1-0 win in October 2000, again in a 2002 World Cup qualifier. England will be keen to win at their new home when the two teams meet.

And four years earlier they broke English hearts with a penalty shoot-out win in the semi-finals of EURO 96.

Nevertheless, prior to German reunification, Wembley was also the scene for England’s greatest footballing triumph – against West Germany in the 1966 World Cup Final.

Games between the two nations are always highly-competitive and for England, the match is also a crucial part of the preparation for the final five EURO 2008 qualifiers – four at home, against Israel, Russia, Estonia and Croatia – and one away in Russia.
