England return home!

Attendance: 88,754

England made their eagerly anticipated return to Wembley Stadium, their spiritual home with a 1-1 draw against Brazil.

The atmosphere at the national stadium was electric with a crowd of 88,754 fans delighted to see England run out under the light of the 133m arch as they made their return to Wembley.

The crowd erupted when Captain John Terry made history by netting England’s first goal at the new stadium - a thunderous header in the 68th minute. Inevitably, it was the returning David Beckham who provided the assist for Terry’s goal.

The Brazilians, who trained at Wembley the day before then equalised with a late injury-time goal from Diego, preventing an emphatic English victory.

The friendly game between England and Brazil was played in good spirit and provided a glory debut for Reading’s left-back Nicky Shorey. The game also saw the return of Michael Owen who made his first senior England appearance since being stretchered off in Germany during last summer’s World Cup.

England vice-captain Steven Gerrard was voted man of the match but it was Beckham who left the field to a standing ovation after being substituted on 77 minutes. After the match Beckham said: “It was a historic night at Wembley and it was great to be out there again. I think we can all be proud of the fantastic stadium.”

Goal-scorer Terry added: “To score the first England goal at the stadium was the ultimate dream.”

England’s next appearance at Wembley will be on Wednesday 22 August 2007 in a friendly match against Germany. Click here for more information on this event.
