Concert For Diana

On Sunday 1 July the Concert for Diana took place at Wembley Stadium to celebrate the life of Princess Diana, on what would have been here 46th birthday. Sir Elton John kicked off proceedings with a rendition of ‘Your Song’ and then introduced Princes William and Harry to the stage to welcome the thousands of guests.

Duran Duran then performed the classics ‘Sunrise’, ‘Wild Boys’ and ‘Rio’, one of Diana’s favourites. They were followed by newcomer James Morrison with ‘You Give Me Something’ and ‘Wonderful World’.

Sienna Miller and Dennis Hopper welcomed Lily Allen onto stage who performed the infectious ‘LDN’ and ‘Smile’, followed by Fergie performing ‘Glamorous’, ‘Speech’ and ‘Big Girls Don't Cry’ accompanied by some acrobatic dancers.

The band The Feeling performed ‘Fill My Little World’ and ‘I Love It When You Call’ to a sun-drenched stadium. This was followed by Pharrell Williams of N.E.R.D. with ‘Drop It Like It’s Hot’ and ‘She Wants To Move’.

Nelly Furtado then took to the stage to perform ‘Say It Right’, ‘I’m Like A Bird’ and ‘Maneater’. The English National Ballet then provided the dance element of the show with Act Four of Swan Lake, reminding the crowd of Diana’s love of ballet.

After a short interval, Status Quo got the crowd going again with ‘Rockin’ All Over The World’ followed by Joss Stone performing ‘You Had Me’ and ‘Under Pressure’.

Roger Hodgson, formerly of Supertramp, then performed a medley of ‘Dreamer’/’Logical Song’/’Breakfast In Amercia’/’Give It A Little Bit’. American band Orson then sang ‘No Tomorrow’ and ‘Happiness’.

Sir Tom Jones performed a series of collaborations for the crowd. Joe Perry of Aerosmith joined Tom on stage for ‘Kiss’ and the Artic Monkeys classic ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor’. The set concluded with ‘Ain’t That A Lot Of Love’ with Joss Stone.

Will Young then took to the stage to perform ‘Switch It On’ followed by Natasha Bedingfield with ‘Unwritten’. Bryan Ferry then performed ‘Slave To Love’, ‘Make Me Feel My Love’ and ‘Let’s Stick Together’.

A number of stars joined Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber on stage for a medley of songs from the musicals. Anastacia sang ‘Superstar’, Connie Fisher and Andrea Ross sang ‘Memory’, The Phantom of the Opera Overture – Music of the Night with Andrea Bocelli, ‘All I Ask Of You’ by Josh Groban and Sarah Brightman and ‘Any Dream Will Do’ performed by the three most famous Josephs, Jason Donovan, Donny Osmond and new star, Lee Mead.

Rod Stewart, introduced by Keifer Sutherland, came on stage and booted a football over the fans then played ‘Maggie May’, 'Baby Jane' and ‘Sailing’. Patsy Kensit then introduced Kanye West to the stage who performed ‘Gold Digger’, ‘Touch The Sky’ and ‘Stronger’. The rap theme then continued as P Diddy performed an extended rendition of ‘Missing You’.

Comeback kings Take That then kept the party going after being introduced by crowd favourite, David Beckham. The band performed new tracks ‘Shine’ and ‘Patience’ followed by the classic ‘Back For Good’. Ricky Gervais then provided the comedy to the night and performed ‘that dance’ to the delight of the crowd.

Sir Elton John then returned to the stage to sing ‘Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting’, ‘Tiny Dancer’ and ‘Ready For Love’ before being joined by the Princes once more to thank the crowd. The thousands of fans then left the stadium with childhood videos of Diana playing on the big screens.
