THE BIG LIFT IS WELL UNDERWAY
02 June 2004
The Wembley Stadium Arch, which began to be lifted on Friday, is now more than 70 metres off the ground (approximately half its eventual height) and has been rotated approximately 30 degrees.
Since the lift began, the procedure has gone well, with the Arch on course to be in position in under six weeks.
People from across North London have called the Wembley Stadium offices to report that they can see the Arch from their homes and offices as it rotates in to place. When it reaches its full height of 133 metres, the Arch should be visible from as far afield as Canary Wharf.
The Arch performs a crucial role in the stadium’s design, supporting the majority of the weight of the retractable roof, and forming the biggest single roof span anywhere in the world.
