The wembley arch is raised almost to its vertical pointTHE WEMBLEY ARCH – NEARLY AT THE VERTICAL!

08 June 2004

Tuesday saw the visit of Mark Palios, FA Chief Executive, Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP and Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London to the Wembley Stadium construction site. All were impressed by the progress made, in particular the magnificent Wembley Arch.

The iconic Wembley Stadium Arch is now visible from miles around as it has almost reached its highest point. The magnificent structure is currently resting at an angle of approximately 80 degrees.

Since the lift began on Friday 28th May the procedure has gone well, with the Arch on course to be in position within a few weeks.

People from across London have called the Wembley Stadium offices to report that they can see the Arch from their homes and offices as it rotates in to place.

Mark Palios was quick to comment on the prominent structure. “The Arch is a phenomenal sight, it will be the greatest sporting landmark in the world.  Even in the relatively short time that I have been FA Chief Executive, the progress of the construction has been very rapid.  Today signals the beginning of a new era for English football."

The Arch performs a crucial role in the stadium’s design, supporting the majority of the weight of the retractable roof, and forming the biggest single roof span anywhere in the world.
