Ask Wembley

When did the new Wembley stadium project start?
The project started in 1995, the National Lottery panel of the English Sports Council, now Sport England (SE) was given the task of allocating lottery funds to support the development of a new English National Stadium for Association Football, Rugby League Football and Track and Field Athletics. Bids were invited from cities wishing to become the preferred venue for the new Stadium. Out of the five bids initially submitted, both Wembley and Manchester were short-listed for further review. The English Sports Council announced their decision to support Wembley as the preferred venue in December 1996. Sport England allocated £120m of lottery funds towards the project. Wembley National Stadium (WNSL) was formed in 1997 to design, finance, build and operate the new Stadium. WNSL purchased the old stadium from Wembley plc in March 1999 for £103 m and paid £3 m in stamp duty to the Government.

How much will the new stadium cost?
The entire Wembley Stadium project will cost £757 million, including WNSL's contribution to the redevelopment of local transport infrastructure. Because we're building the best in the world. You only have one chance to rebuild Wembley Stadium and it would have been a betrayal of England's sporting heritage had we compromised on the design. The facilities that the stadium will offer mean that, unlike many other national stadia, it will operate at a profit. All the build costs have been independently reviewed and found to represent value for money.

How do these costs breakdown?
• The purchase of the land and early design fees cost £120 million.
• The basic cost of building the stadium is £352 million
• Demolishing the old stadium and fitting out the new will cost £99 million.
• The contribution to local infrastructure improvements is £21 million.
• Financing the project, management and other costs amount to £165 million.

Once the stadium opens, thousands more part-time and full time jobs will be created. Wembley Stadium is at the centre of Brent Council's "Vision 2020" regeneration plans. Will the new stadium be able to host athletics events?
Though designed primarily for football, rugby and music events, the new Wembley Stadium is also capable of hosting world-class athletic events. A revolutionary solution has been developed to ensure that both football and athletics fans can enjoy perfect views, thanks to a temporary athletics platform that can be installed when necessary. If Wembley is required to host a major athletics event, the prefabricated platform can be built over the lower bowl, covering some of the seats but creating the increased surface needed to fit an athletics track. The platform will take just a few weeks to install and remove, making Wembley a versatile, multi-sport venue. There has been significant progress on securing land for a potential athletics warm-up facility after discussions with the London Borough of Brent. Four possible sites have been identified, with Sherrins Farm likely to prove the most deliverable solution.
