Alex Murphy

Alex Murphy signed for his native St Helens on his sixteenth birthday in 1955.  He had remarkable acceleration and pace, as well as an amazing ability to read the game and score tries.

In 1958 he became the youngest British tourist Down Under and was instantly identified as one of the greatest scrum-halves in the world.

He captained St Helens during the 1966 Challenge Cup Final victory at Wembley against local rivals Wigan.

Five years later, having left St Helens to be player coach at Leigh, he secured his second Challenge Cup Final winners medal and the Lance Todd trophy for the man of the match in an unexpected win over huge favourites Leeds.

In 1974, he captained Warrington to a 24-9 win against Featherstone in the Challenge Cup Final and returned to Wembley a year later with the same club to win another winners medal, but this time only as coach.
