Jim Baxter
JIM BAXTER, or “Slim Jim”, was an elegant left-half for Glasgow Rangers and Sunderland who won 34 caps for Scotland.
He excelled in matches against England at Wembley, inspiring victories in 1963 (2-1) and 1967 (3-2). Wembley, looking especially smart with its new roof, braced itself for the invasion of the Tartan Army in ’63. Baxter’s presence dominated the match and he scored twice in a bruising first half. Four years later he was Scotland’s No.6 again as they beat the reigning world champions and he was said to have played as though his life depended on it.
