"Stanley Matthews" Final"Stanley Matthews" Final

The 1953 FA Cup Final will always be known as the "Matthews Final". Blackpool were 3-1 down to Bolton as Stanley Matthews, striving for the third time to gain a Cup winners’ medal at the age of 38, stepped forward to dominate the last quarter of the match. Blackpool finally clicked into gear and it was Matthews who proved to be their inspiration. After his great friend Stan Mortensen had completed a hat-trick with three minutes to go, the dribbling maestro cut a diagonal pass back from the by-line in the last few seconds for Bill Perry to score a dramatic winner at 4-3.
