On a grey November afternoon in 1953 a capacity Wembley crowd saw England destroyed by one of the most breathtaking team performances of all time. The scoreline of 6-3 in no way flattered the Hungarians. England’s disappointment at losing their long and distinguished unbeaten home record against Continental opposition was tempered by the knowledge that the record had gone against a truly great side. Hungary, the reigning Olympic champions, were awesome. They stunned Wembley with a goal inside two minutes from Hidegkuti, who scored a hat-trick, and there were further dazzling strikes from Puskas (two) and Boszik.
