David Meyler is a record breaker!
The Hull midfielder struck deep into injury time to ensure the East Riding side’s place in this season’s FA Cup Final and for that reason he was, no doubt, elated.
However, what he probably didn’t realise is that his goal had also set a new record for a high scoring FA Cup game at Wembley.
Meyler’s strike was the eighth of a truly dramatic afternoon under the arch and surpassed the seven goals which flew in during the 1953 FA Cup Final.
That Final will forever be remembered as ‘The Matthews Final’ as Sir Stanley finally got his hands on the winner’s medal he’d always longed for.
Meyler will, no doubt, be hoping to emulate the great man by going up those famous steps a winner on 17 May.
For now at least though he will have to be happy with a place in the FA Cup Final and a place in the history books.
