He first signed for Bradford Northern in 1978, where he played most of his games at stand-off or loose forward.
In 1984-85 he became the first player to score more than 50 tries in a season since Billy Boston and the first non-winger to reach this figure for 70 years.
At the start of the following season he signed for Wigan where he scored 35 tries in his first season.
During his time at Wigan he won four Challenge Cup winners medals at Wembley, three League Championships and the World Club Challenge, to name a few. He was also voted the most valuable Rugby League player in the world on three separate occasions.
He was capped 34 times by Great Britain and was honoured with an MBE by the Queen in January 1990 for his services to Rugby League.
