Charlton 4 - Sunderland 4
In one of the finest games ever seen at Wembley, Charlton Athletic eventually beat Sunderland 7-6 on penalties after the teams had been locked at 4-4 after extra time. It took the Londoners back to the top division after a gap of eight years. Wearside-born Clive Mendonca scored a hat-trick for Charlton, the first in a Wembley play-off. Defender Richard Rufus notched their other goal, the first of his career, in a match that lurched between joy and despair for both sides. Sunderland full-back Michael Gray, later to play for England, missed the penalty that cost his club promotion - and about £10 million.
