Ticket information for this match, including prices and sales dates, will be announced in due course.

England to face Nigeria at Wembley

England will face two fellow 2018 FIFA World Cup finalists ahead of this summer’s tournament in Russia.

The Three Lions will host Nigeria at Wembley Stadium connected by EE on Saturday 2 June (5.15pm kick-off time) before moving on to Leeds United’s Elland Road to welcome Costa Rica on Thursday 7 June (8pm kick-off).

Both opponents will provide important tests for Gareth Southgate’s squad as they finalise preparations for a group including Tunisia, Panama and Belgium.

The England manager said: “We’ve mostly played European opposition up to now and the Brazil game acted as a reminder that we need to challenge ourselves in different ways as a team.

“We’re going into a World Cup where we will play African and Central American opposition so we get that with the games against Nigeria and Costa Rica but it’s not just about the games we’ve got in the group but hopefully beyond that as well. We want to expose the team to different styles and different experiences.”

As well as a send-off at England’s iconic home of Wembley, the summer schedule will also see the football hotbed of Yorkshire host a senior men’s international for the first time since 2002. This follows the exciting reception the Three Lions received in Manchester and Sunderland ahead of Euro 2016.

Southgate added: “All of the feedback from the team before Euro 2016 was really positive, the players enjoyed it and it was definitely well received by the public.

“We’re immensely proud to play the majority of matches at Wembley as our national stadium and it’s always special.  Equally, it’s nice when we have an opportunity to take the team on the road. We have a huge following in Yorkshire with large numbers of our members and travelling support coming from that area.

“Having been to Manchester and the North East last time, it’s nice to be able to go to Yorkshire for a different experience for everybody.”

England have met Nigeria on two previous occasions; a 1-0 victory at Wembley in 1994 and a goalless draw at the 2002 World Cup finals in Japan.  The three-time African Cup of Nations champions are preparing for their sixth World Cup finals having been drawn in a group with Argentina, Iceland and Croatia.

Meanwhile, England’s only previous meeting with Costa Rica came at the last World Cup in Brazil and ended in a goalless draw in Belo Horizonte.  The 2014 quarter-finalists have been pitted against Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia in what will be their fifth finals.

Southgate’s men are next in action in March when they face the Netherlands at the Amsterdam ArenA on Friday 23 March (7.45pm kick-off) and Italy at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday 27 March (8pm kick-off).
